Why do couples argue over money?

Why do couples argue over money?

Money, they say, is the number one reason why couples argue. Have you had any money arguments? My wife and I had one just yesterday. 😂

Why do couples argue over money? Probably because money represents power. He who has and controls the money has the power. Everything seems to boil down to money. The wisest man who ever lived says so.

“A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.” Ecclesiastes 10:19

Couples have power struggles when they are fighting over their conflicting needs and perspectives. Who will get their way? Who will submit to who? Who is right? When couples find themselves in this position, they have lost their sense of partnership. They are now fighting for dominance.

What couples need is more compassion. According to Merriam-Webster, compassion is sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it. It is an awareness of your spouse’s needs and motivation to meet those needs.

We are a selfish generation. Standing back and looking at America, we are a selfish people. Are we concerned about our neighbors? Who is my neighbor? Everybody who is like me and agrees with me. This same self-centeredness has manifested in our marriages. Without compassion and others’ awareness – your marriage is doomed to become a power struggle.

But who knows that money can’t buy happiness? Neither can power or popularity. My wife’s grandmother used to say, “If you want to be happy, make others happy and build a little heaven down here.” Happiness comes from giving. The more you give, the more you receive. A partnership is us taking care of each other.
